Many businesses that were meeting at an office in the past (advisors and consultants of all sorts, for example) are now meeting via Zoom etc. and will likely continue for quite a while. This changes the nature of the “service area” – how would you address this change?

That’s a really good point! With the current circumstances, some SABs may be able to expand their areas by working remotely. That said, some SABs may be out of action altogether if their work can’t be done online. The likes of Google My Business have introduced updates to their platform to ensure businesses can communicate any pivots they’ve made, such as offering classes online, and so on: https://support.google.com/business/answer/9773423?hl=en-GB.

Given that this change will most likely be only temporary, I’d suggest making use of features available to you, such as those in GMB, and continuing to communicate clearly with customers, so they’re aware of any updates and remote availability.

Cylex websites (cylex.us.com, cylex-uk.co.uk, cylex-canada.ca, cylex-australia.com) allows service area businesses as well. There is an option to hide the address and there is a free text list of served locations. Premium listings will be listed for each locality from the service area list.
In the other hand there are a huge amount of local businesses setting up spammy listing for each locality, district, ZIP or major streets using the same address or fake addresses.

Hey Jacek, thanks! I haven’t come across that site but just because there aren’t as many results as you’d expect it doesn’t mean it’s getting penalised (though it also doesn’t mean it’s not). It could be that the majority of listings and content is behind a password, making that content unindexable.

Hi Greg, it’s really about consistency. If the address is visible on some sites but not others, then Google would question why the address is missing on some sites. If the address is hidden across all citation sites, Google will rely on the information that’s been provided via GMB.

However, I can imagine that where you have three SABs with the same number of reviews, a similar link profile, and in the same industry serving the same area, then having a physical store front might indeed give them a leg up.

Wow, what a list Jamie. What’s your opinion on sites like infoisinfo. I googled site:www.infoisinfo-au.com and it gives only about 1k results. In most cases it means the site was penalised somehow and it is almost impossible to index your company profile.
