Crane Collapse at Miami Hospital Killed One, Injured Other Workers

August 29, 2023

Authorities were still investigating Tuesday after a construction crane at a Miami hospital buckled and collapsed onto construction workers, killing one person and injuring four others.

The 200-foot crane was in use Saturday at a part of HCA Florida Mercy Hospital that was under renovation, the Miami Herald and other news sites reported. Two patients were treated at the hospital and two were taken to a trauma center, authorities said.

The Miami Police Department was investigating.

The collapse came a month after a massive construction crane caught fire and fell in New York City, sending tons of concrete and steel into a busy Manhattan street.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that an average of 42 people are killed each year in the U.S. from crane-related accidents. Fatalities rose from 2011 to 2012, but have declined since 2014. Texas had the most fatalities from 2011 to 2017, with 50, followed by Florida and New York, which both had 16 in that time span.
